Catholic Bishop warns voters who back Democrats put eternal salvation at risk

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Springfield, Illinois, is warning that the Democratic Party has endorsed “intrinsic evils” and consequently, voters who back Democratic candidates have put their eternal salvation at risk.

In the Catholic Times, the official newspaper of the Springfield diocese, Bishop Thomas John Paprocki uses the manufactured controversy about mentioning “God” in the Democratic Platform to argue that the Democrats are hostile to faith, and went on to attack Democrats for endorsing gay rights and opposing the criminalization of abortion. He said those two planks demonstrate that the Democrats “explicitly endorse intrinsic evils,” while noting that he has “read the Republican Party Platform and there is nothing in it that supports or promotes an intrinsic evil or a serious sin.”

Paprocki concludes with a warning that while he is “not telling you which party or which candidates to vote for or against,” backing the Democratic Party may put your eternal salvation at risk: “a vote for a candidate who promotes actions or behaviors that are intrinsically evil and gravely sinful makes you morally complicit and places the eternal salvation of your own soul in serious jeopardy.”

Watch:

Said Paprocki:

There are many positive and beneficial planks in the Democratic Party Platform, but I am pointing out those that explicitly endorse intrinsic evils. My job is not to tell you for whom you should vote. But I do have a duty to speak out on moral issues. I would be abdicating this duty if I remained silent out of fear of sounding “political” and didn’t say anything about the morality of these issues. People of faith object to these platform positions that promote serious sins. I know that the Democratic Party’s official “unequivocal” support for abortion is deeply troubling to pro-life Democrats.

[...]

Certainly there are “pro-choice” Republicans who support abortion rights and “Log Cabin Republicans” who promote same-sex marriage, and they are equally as wrong as their Democratic counterparts. But these positions do not have the official support of their party.

Again, I am not telling you which party or which candidates to vote for or against, but I am saying that you need to think and pray very carefully about your vote, because a vote for a candidate who promotes actions or behaviors that are intrinsically evil and gravely sinful makes you morally complicit and places the eternal salvation of your own soul in serious jeopardy.

  22. He can warn all he likes, but every person’s faith or lack thereof is their own business. Organized religion is a farce anyway. Nobody else is responsible for you but yourself. Your relationship with God, Buddha, Allah, Jah, etc. is personal. If people simply followed the golden rule, it would work wonders! This calls for a revocation of tax exempt status for all churches across the board. Its happening too often. This government allows you to worship whomever/ however you want. That should be enough for you. If you feel the government needs to follow your religion, move to a country that only practices your religion.

  27. Catholic bishops in the U.S. are still hiding personnel files from law enforcement. EVERY accusation of child abuse needs to be turned over to actual law enforcement and NOT handled internally to spare the Church any embarrassment that might cost it money. The bishops are directly responsible for moving pedophiles around, year in and year out, without warning the congregations, thereby endangering children. And THIS guy, seriously, is going to warn us what puts our souls in peril?!!?!

Posted on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 5:51pm
  29. Riiight..and I suppose covering for and shuffling pedophile priests from one Diocese to the other isn’t sinful? I suppose that your Pope and Bishops won’t be held accountable for their part of the cover up because they are ‘holy men’? I tell you what, please explain to your congregations why up to the 14th century the Holy Roman Church actually married homosexual couples. THAT is historical fact. Explain this away, as you explain everything else away that conflicts with your ever-changing dogmatic, self-righteous, neolithic and narrow views of God, which reduces Him to little more than how the Greeks thought of Zeus or Apollo. Your Church has lost credibility when it comes to what is right or wrong, creep, so you can take your warnings of hell and damnation, shove them where the sun doesn’t shine (without vaseline because you are all freaky like that), and go to hell (if there is one). What a bunch of self-promoting, creepy, twisted tools you all are.

Is it really so surprising they have suicide bombers in the east.If the churches promoted it here they would have no problem finding people to take up the cause. Its so sad how people give up what little common sense they have for the promise of the after life.Whats so wrong with being good people and loving everyone now ,while we are on earth and live and let live.Instead we allow religious leaders that dont even know or really care about us, wage war on others they dont agree with in the name of their God,And threaten you with your after life..What would be worse living peacefully in a world with gay and /or black neighbors or live eternity in a world full of Mitt Romneys.I’ll go with common sense and decency and take my chances…

It’s harms no-one, benefits the couple and brings them even closer together, and has absolutely no effect on straight marriage. If they can possibly think a straight couple’s marriage is harmed by a gay couple’s, there is something seriously wrong.

Yes, the church is 200 years behind the times… maybe with your help it will become 250 years behind. You are losing followers by the thousands and cannot ordain a man that you can trust. God is telling you something and it isnt about the “evils” of gays, same sex marriage, or birth control. Wake up and do something meaningful with your life. It isnt all about edicts and pomp and circumstance. Not only have you lost my membership, you have lost something much more… my respect.
