Log Cabin Republicans to run newspaper ad supporting marriage equality

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

TAMPA, Fla. — With the Republican National Convention in full swing, the Log Cabin Republicans and Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry will be running an ad in Wednesday’s Tampa Tribune calling on the GOP to support the freedom to marry for gay and lesbian couples.

The full-page color ad, featuring photos of same-sex couples and their families, “emphasizes that the freedom to marry is fully consistent with principles valued by conservatives: freedom, personal responsibility, and the importance of family,” according to a statement by the Log Cabin Republicans.

The ad comes in the wake of the party’s extreme stance on marriage in its draft platform, which includes support for a federal constitutional amendment banning the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.

Tony Perkins, the president of the anti-gay Family Research Council, authored the marriage plank, which was approved Tuesday and the GOP convention.

“Gay or straight, Republicans are united in the belief that strong families are critical to a free society,” said R. Clarke Cooper, Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans.

“As fellow conservatives, Log Cabin Republicans actually agree with Tony Perkins about the importance of family values. The difference is, we believe that the freedom to marry is directly in line with the core ideals and principles of the Republican Party – less government, more individual freedom, personal responsibility and the importance of family,” Cooper said.

  1. No amount of ad running will expunge what they have supported for years.

  7. Yes…we do exist..gay republicans…why? Because I am fiscally republican and the only issue I have with the republican party is the gay rights issue…and just because I don’t believe in giving a handout to people who refuse to help themselves does not mean I don’t believe the poor should have equal rights…I’m not even sure what was meant by that comment…

  18. It’s really sad when someone puts money before who they are as a person. Who cares if the economy sucks? We STILL don’t have the same rights as Straight Americans and you LCR are just wasting your time and your advertising dollars on this ad. What don’t you get about the fact that Republicans are against the LGBT community. And if you tell yourself differently, you’re just in denial!

  28. They should just become Democrats! Their party has made it perfectly clear over the years and especially after this platform they just passed that they have no interest in seeing any form of equality for the LGBTQIA community. Time to stop beating their heads against a rock!
