Billy Graham urges North Carolina voters to ban marriage equality

Famed televangelist Rev. Billy Graham on Wednesday urged North Carolina voters to support an amendment to the state constitution banning same-sex marriage.

“Watching the moral decline of our country causes me great concern,” said Graham, 93, in a statement. “I believe the home and marriage is the foundation of our society and must be protected.”

Graham’s statement was issued by the Charlotte-based Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, which also announced that Graham’s message would be published in a full-page ad that would appear in 14 North Carolina newspapers throughout the weekend.

“The Bible is clear — God’s definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. I want to urge my fellow North Carolinians to vote for the marriage amendment,” Graham, who lives near Asheville, said in the ad:

The amendment goes before North Carolina voters next Tuesday, May 8.
