Anti-gay hate groups protest SPLC for calling them anti-gay hate groups

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — About a dozen African American pastors joined anti-gay extremists on Tuesday in condemning the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for using its “hate group” label to describe faith-based organizations that demonize the LGBT community, characterizing it as part of an orchestrated liberal plot.

The pastors spoke at a press conference staged outside the SPLC offices in Montgomery, Ala,. by Americans for the Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), which the SPLC lists as an anti-gay hate group.

“The SPLC has moved from monitoring actual hate groups like the KKK and neo-Nazis to slandering mainstream Christian organizations with that very same hate group label,” said Matt Barber of the Liberty Counsel, affiliated with Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University.

“By extension, the SPLC is smearing billions of Christians and Jews worldwide as haters simply because they embrace the traditional Judeo-Christian ethics,” Barber said.

Rachel Conner of Abiding Truth Ministries, also listed as a hate group, charged that “the Southern Poverty Law Center has now become a tool of the God-haters, promoting hatred in the form of vicious lies against Christianity.”

“This has nothing to do with hate and tolerance,” said Peter LaBarbera, president of AFTAH. “It has everything to do with pro-gay politicking.”

According to SPLC staff, “In fact, it has everything to do with hate and intolerance.”

Mark Potok, editor of the SPLC’s Intelligence Report responded to the accusations:

“Our listing of anti-gay hate groups is completely unrelated to religion, Christianity or the Bible. These groups are listed because they repeatedly lie in an effort to defame LGBT people, an exercise they’ve been extraordinarily successful at. The idea that we are criticizing these groups because they represent Judeo-Christian morality is simply ludicrous.

“The SPLC does not identify anti-gay hate groups based on their religious views. Instead, the SPLC lists anti-gay groups on the basis of spreading known falsehoods and demonizing propaganda against LGBT people, such as the claim that gay men largely orchestrated the Holocaust.”

In 2007, LaBarbera claimed that there was “a disproportionate incidence of pedophilia” among gay men, and has also compared the alleged dangers of homosexuality to those of “smoking, alcohol and drug abuse.”

The AFTAH website also describes homosexuality as a “lethal behavior addiction.”

In a written statement read at the news conference, Abiding Truth Ministries founder Scott Lively called on God to destroy the SPLC:

“My prayer, as one who really does hate irrational prejudice, is that the Lord by His sovereign power will remove this dangerous, hate-spreading organization from our nation and cause its leaders and members to repent for their wickedness,” Lively said. “I want to make clear that I am asking God himself to destroy their organization.”

  7. In 1936, a man once said, “I believe today I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord’s work.” – Adolph Hitler. It is a VERY sad state of affairs when he is almost quoted exactly by ministers in the christian faith and potential Presidential candidates. Just change the word Jews for Gays…. Remember, not everyone who talks of God is good, and not everyone who is good talks of God….

  16. The Prayer for the destruction SPLC, will in fact backfire on those who pray for such things to happen. God is a Just Judge. God does not answer this kind of prayer to benefit the ones praying it. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

  26. I find it really horrendous that anyone calling themselves men of God would pray to have something or someone else annihilated. The suggestion that pedophilia is because of the mainstream gay men. I hate to tell these assholes to get their heads out of the sound. It has been proven time and time again statistically that MOST ALL pedophiles are heterosexual men from and living in so called good Christian homes. They all bark about the Gays destroying the world and life as we know it to try and cover up their own sexual deviancy (in the name of God that is.)Religion needs to stay out of politics and politics needs to stay out of my bedroom. I fear that anyone of us going to hell will have a long wait in line to get in as these so called church leaders are going to have a front row seat to the door called enter!

  31. The SPLC is exactly right about these hate groups. Liberty Counsel is a disgusting hate organization. They need to be investigated by the government and the lawyers need to be disbarred. I’ll never understand why Rethuglican, conservative, right-wing, religious fanatics think they can force other normal people to accept their deviant views and lifestyle. They love to tell other people how to live their lives, while their own lives are in shambles. The Christian (esp. Catholic, Mormon, Evangelical, and Southern Baptist) Taliban in this country are going to face a violent wake up call soon if they keep trying to spread their hatred, intolerant views, and intolerant actions on normal Americans. And it is patently unfair that gay Americans and their loved ones should suffer the devastating effects of discrimination while the bigots and their loved ones go about their lives as if nothing is wrong. Anyone coming into contact with Peter LaBarbera, Matt Barber, Rachel Connor, Scott Lively, members of Liberty Counsel, AFTAH, or Abiding Truth Ministries, or their loved ones, should take any action possible to harm them.

  32. Of course they ignore the fact that it is not religious beliefs that get groups listed as hate groups.

it is demonizing and telling falsehoods about gay people.

So these pastors are lying by omission – still a sin.

but of course by riling up the people, they get more money in the collection plate.

Maybe they ought to do something for gays, and remember they are joining those who made America the second to last nation to end slavery in the westernized world

Hitches was right in his books subtitle – religion poisons everything.

  35. these people are hate groups because they intentionally try to defame LGBT’s by spreading false information and propaganda against them. they are hypocrites and un-Christian because of the way they carry out their beliefs. it’s one thing to be against gays because of religious beliefs but another thing to spread lies about them to try to justify it. these people have an irrational prejudice that they try to rationalize in the most extreme way
