Linda Harvey of Mission America has a message for parents: don’t let your child be treated by a gay or lesbian doctor or nurse.
On her radio show last week, Harvey said that parents should prohibit gay and lesbian health care employees from attending to their children because their sexual orientation is “erroneously influential to children.”

“There are a few homosexual doctors treating kids, there are far more nurses, LPNs, technicians and other health care workers in these lifestyles,” Harvey contends. “Should your child ever be hospitalized, you do not want your child treated or cared for by one of these members of the Children’s Hospital gay employees group.”

“How do you feel about open homosexuals tending to your child in a health care setting? Do you think these folks provide good role modeling at a time when your child is very vulnerable? I was thinking about this recently when I heard that Children’s Hospital in Columbus has a homosexual employees group called NCHARGE, which stands for Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Advocates Representing Gay Employees. The meeting minutes of this groups reveal that they participated in last June’s gay pride parade, that they participated in a health expo on adolescent health this summer and that they’re concerned about same-sex partner benefits. They’re also planning to be identified with rainbow lapel pins.
“But let’s say your eleven year-old has broken her leg rather badly and needs to be in the hospital a few days, which would you prefer: a nurse who’s proud of her lesbianism, who has rainbow identifiers on her work clothing, or a nurse who does not?
“I would like to suggest that parents think long and hard about this. If you want your children to admire people who proclaim a homosexual lifestyle, they’re involvement with your child during a hospital stay is sure to be an influence.
“And let me be clear that folks involved in these behaviors can be certainly competent workers but they are tacking on to their workplace identity one that is highly offensive to many people and can be erroneously influential to children who won’t, or shouldn’t, see the whole picture of how this behavior really manifests itself.
“Here’s what parents can do: select your pediatrician very carefully, first of all. There are a few homosexual doctors treating kids, there are far more nurses, LPNs, technicians and other health care workers in these lifestyles so you may want to consider writing a letter that you file with your pediatrician that should your child ever be hospitalized, you do not want your child to be treated or cared for by one of these members of the Children’s Hospital gay employees group except in the case of an emergency situation.
“But for routine in-hospital care where contact with your child would be required, your values should be respected.”

As a 25+ year Paramedic Ive been asked a million questions by my patients: Am I going to die? Will I get better? What’s wrong with me? Can you help me? Can you stop the pain? Does anybody care about me?

I’ve been attacked, cursed, slapped, kicked, punched, shot at, cut, spat on, bled on, pissed on, shit on, puked on, cried on, held onto for dear life, begged, appreciated, thanked, asked on a date, saved by Jesus, Napolean, and the Great Poobah. I have brought new lives into this world. I have held the hand and prayed with those leaving this world. I have gone home after a 24 hour shift with no sleep, one meal, and collapsed into the arms of my partner sobbing because of what I’ve seen and had to do.
And I know honor and gratitude Mrs. Harvey. 5 rows of commendation bars for doing what I love well and truly. Accolades. Medals. I read this article this morning with a sickness growing in my stomach. As a person in the medical profession my patients love me for my ability to provide quality health care to them. Linda Harvey continues to amaze me with her ignorance. I guess she thinks that I’m a lesbian now because I went to the doctor’s office and the nurse was a lesbian and somehow I magically found that out and thought, “Wow, I want to be just like her, so I should become a lesbian.” Puh-lease.
There I was all of 7 with a compound fracture of my femur. I was in shock from the pain. I don’t remembered much not the name of any nurse or doctor. Except nurse julie …. I remember her because she had a rainbow pin on her coat. It was that moment I realized I wanted to be gay. So after three surgeries and seeing 50 or so different staff members I was discharged 2 weeks later and immediately went on the internet to find out everything about the gays and how to join.

I do partially understand Harvey’s arguments if I’m honest. I’m gay myself and dont understand the problem of having your kid treated by a gay doctor/nurse. What I do understand though is why she finds it strange that the gay personnel of Columbus’ Children’s Hostpital feels the need to wear (if that’s true) rainbow identifiers. At the moment you start working you’re not a gay person, you are a nurse who happens to be gay, but that fact is completely irrelevant to your patient. Furthermore Harvey never directly says that gay people shouldnt perform jobs in the healthcare system, but that she based on personal believes would prefer her children not to be treated by them.
