Former VP Dick Cheney, wife Lynne, reaffirm support for same-sex marriage

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wie Lynne appeared on ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday, and eventually the conversation turned to same-sex marriage.

Lynne Cheney, explaining that their lesbian daughter Mary is partnered with Heather Poe and have two children together, said, “I think that whatever Mary and Heather decide to do is up to Mary and Heather.”

“So, you’re not against gay marriage,” asked Barbara Walters.

“That’s right,” said Lynne Cheney.

The former Vice President agreed, “I think freedom means freedom for everybody.”

Watch:

At a 2009 National Press Club event, Dick Cheney said he thought “people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish,” but that he supported state-by-state regulation of marriage rights.

The former Vice President made similar remarks publicly as early as 2004.

  2. Now he says he supports same sex marriage! Why Couldn’t he have used his influence when he was in Office? He used his influence to take this country to war.

  7. Gee, if only Dick Cheney had ever had a platform from which to push for that. As I remember, the issue of Gay Marriage was pushed onto many states’ ballots in 2004 to get the GOP base riled up so they would go vote.

  12. Let’s all agree that regardless of Dick’s views regarding same-sex marriage, he was a horrible man who prides himself on “making America safe again” through the use of torture, and any other means necessary. Not ok.

  29. I am very shocked but he does seem very sincere on this one issue. I had read somewhere he was responsible for getting a few of the republicans to switch their votes in NY by promising to campaign for them. The only nice thing the guys has ever done for the LGBT community. He is supporting his daughter and haviong fun torturing the renutlican candidates at the same time. LOL

  31. Nothing ever seems to please anyone anymore. Can’t you all stop bitching and be happy at least someone supports our rights. Past is the past, move the f*ck on. Thank you Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney for your words of support – even if its a tad bit late.

  33. People understand disability when they acquire a disability; understand the importance of equal rights when they have a family member or friend who is gay, black, short, tall or whatever the case may be. How the heck to get most people to understand that all folk are equal in society and have an equal right to contribute to society and community every day. JESleeth

  40. He was against equality for all before homosexuality hit him in the face. He changed his mind? Big deal! He’s still a war criminal.

  43. Do we not have enough trouble with equality??? Cheney wouldn’t know a moral position if it bit him on the ass!!! He needs to crawl back under the rock from whence he came.

Posted on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 8:01am
  44. They should have said so 10 years ago when his puppet Bush and Gepetto Karl Rove were ruthlessly exploiting gay marriage as a wedge issue for political gain. Douchebags.
