GOProud names Ann Coulter honorary chair of advisory council

GOProud, a national organization of gay conservatives and their allies, on Wednesday announced that Ann Coulter was joining the organization’s Advisory Council as Honorary Chair.

Ann Coulter

Coulter’s official title will be “Gay Icon,” according to a GOProud statement.

Coulter, who has a history of anti-gay statements and who does not support marriage equality -– at least not publicly — said in a recent appearance on Joy Behar’s cable talk show, she thinks in some cases “ex-gay” therapy works, and that the military should be comprised of only heterosexual males.

But Christopher Barron, Chairman of GOProud’s Board, calls Coulter “a brilliant and fearless leader of the conservative movement, we are honored to have her as part of GOProud’s leadership.”

“Ann helped put our organization on the map. Politics is full of the meek, the compromising and the apologists — Ann, like GOProud, is the exact opposite of all of those things. We need more Ann Coulters,” Barron said, in a statement.

Evan Hurst at Truth Wins Out, a non-profit organization that fights anti-LGBT religious extremism, called the move “a schtick, a business strategy.”

GOProud is a motley crew of bitter, mostly white, male, allegedly homosexual men who value their white male privilege and their tax cuts far more than they value anything resembling principles. They’re willing to advocate against the equality of their fellow LGBT people because, you see, they don’t see the rest of the gay community as their “fellow” anything. Like other country club wingnuts, they’ve got theirs and screw the rest of you.

“Ann Coulter is not a serious part of the conservative movement — her positions are a throwback and do more harm than anything else,” R. Clarke Cooper, Executive Director of Log Cabin Republicans recently told the Washington Blade.

Coulter says she is “honored to serve in this capacity on GOProud’s Advisory Council, and look forward to being the Queen of Fabulous.”
