First Lady Michelle Obama discusses America’s ‘culture of bullying’

Monday, August 29, 2011

The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday and discussed her thoughts on the culture of bullying in our country.

“We need to start sending different messages to our kids,” the First Lady said.

“First of all, we need to let them know that it does get better, that challenges they face for the few years that they’re in high school or college, they can’t let that eat them up, because all of these young people, regardless of their race, their sexual orientation, they are gifts to us, and they have so much to offer.”

Watch:

Mrs. Obama said it’s up to “the adults in the room to create the safe environment” and encourage their kids to speak out against bullying.

  3. Could LGBTQNation please repost this for all New Hampshire residents to sign? Currently the new conservative legislature in NH is gearing up to try and repeal marriage equality, which was just passed in 2009. This is to tell our legislators that we want to keep marriage equality! Thank you! http://monadnocklivefreeandequal.wordpress.com/sign-the-petition/

  7. Bigotry: Unreasonable, Prejudiced, and Intolerant.

Those are not the values anyone should aspire to.

  8. Can they also teach adults not to be bigoted and prejudice as well? It’s great that they’re educating the next generation, but the current one needs a good talking to as well.

  11. @Jael: I think you mean “intolerant” people. Not all straight people are against gay rights. Generalizing them like that wont do any good. It’ll just drive both groups further apart.

  12. Once again, lets show support for the LGB. Wait, weren’t there more letters there? Maybe if Michelle ignores trans people they’ll just go away.
