Straight, Republican constituent testifies against Minnesota ban on gay marriage

Madeline Koch, a self-identified heterosexual Republican, testified on Friday before the Minnesota Senate committee to oppose amending the state’s constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

“As a Republican I ask you not to pass this legislation … and force us to spend valuable time later to undoing the mistakes made here today, ” Koch said. “I ask you to not let me down as my representatives, by putting your own personal beliefs and benefits in the way of equality,” Watch:

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill 8-4, with all Republicans in favor and all Democrats opposed.

On Monday, the House Civil Law Committee approved the bill by a vote of 10-7 along party lines, with all Republicans voting in favor of the measure.

  5. Speaking against a marriage equality ban is *not* the same as insisting on marriage equality.

  6. this is an outrage that was decided to be done here, in that state. I hope people are angry enough to rally against this legislation.

  11. A constitution should ENSURE equal rights, not BAN them. Theoretically, Republicans should be supportive of LESS government interference and MORE individual rights. Kudos, Ms. Koch, for making this distinction.

  18. I think we can all come to a consensus. Yes, a majority of republicans aren’t in favor of same-sex marriage, but there are some that are…like there are some democrats who are not in favor of it as well. So we should love the ones who are for SSM and not favor the ones who aren’t.
