Gay couple, together 61 years, still yearn for the right to marry

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

A new video released by Freedom to Marry tells the story of Richard Dorr, 84, and John Mace, 91, who recently celebrated 61 years together as a couple. The couple desperately wants to marry in their home state of New York.

Haven’t they waited long enough? Watch:

Freedom to Marry is among a coalition of LGBT advocacy groups that have united efforts to pass marriage equality legislation in New York state during the 2011 legislative session.

  17. Straight couples can have a “marriage” that lasts for a few months but a couple who has been together for 61 YEARS can’t have the same right? It’s just wrong. I hope they can live their dream in the very near future…their story made me cry! Everyone deserves to be happy. <3

  18. I think they should be able too. They have been together longer than most straight couples. Now that’s love.

  21. See, that just proves that True Love can exist in all forms. C’mon, people, we NEED to do something about Gay marriage. Wanting and saying that you are going to do something about it is great, but actually DOING something about it is another. We’re all in this together, and by dammit, we can make this happen if we want to.

  24. That is truly amazing. They should be allowed to marry. True love is an amazing thing that so few are lucky to find. I hope they can wed!!!!

  25. Even if they can’t get married, they are the luckiest people in the world, most people gay or straight cannot find love like that. They are truly blessed and I do hope they are able to get married.

  26. Wow. How often do you come across that? Being through so much together for so long. Let them wed. They deserve it!

  29. they shouldnt have to move where its legal, they have every right to get married where they live. The u.s.a should really take a leaf out of the uk’s book when it comes to human rights and gay equality, because so far its seriously lacking on both fronts.

  32. New York should have been the first state to legalize gay marriage! Such a rich history of gay people in the theatre and the arts in general. Shame, shame!!! Time to do this! Unfortunatly, I live in Texas, and will never live to see the law passed here.
