Out country singer Chely Wright and her fiancée, Lauren Blitzer, an LGBT civil rights activist, have announced their engagement, and plan to marry this summer.

Wright, 40, who came out last year, was the first major country music artist to declare that she was gay.

“The freedom of being out and open about who I am allowed me to find and fall in love with Lauren, the most amazing woman I’ve ever known,” Wright told People magazine.

The couple met through their youth advocacy work, and said that their “passion for Scrabble holds them together.”

Wright in 1995 was named best new female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music in 1995.

The wedding is scheduled for August 20 in Connecticut, one of five U.S. where same-sex marriage is legal.
