Wyoming House committee passes bill to invalidate out-of-state gay marriages

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — In the final minutes of the day, a Wyoming House committee voted 4-2 on Tuesday to approve a bill which would invalidate same-sex marriages performed out-of-state.

The bill has until Thursday — when the legislative session ends — to pass both the House and the Senate.

In order to pass the bill this year, rather than waiting until the next legislative session, Republicans conceded to remove the “civil unions” language from the bill altogether. So apparently out-of-state civil unions will still be valid in — ironically — the “Equality State.”

The Casper Tribune reports:

The House’s version of the bill stated that same-sex marriages and civil unions aren’t entitled to any obligations, benefits or protections under Wyoming law; the Senate added a clause guaranteeing people in a legal out-of-state civil union would have access to Wyoming courts.

But with the Legislature set to adjourn for the year on Thursday, the conference committee took out all language dealing with civil unions and court access.

While Democrats are opposed to the bill, they may not have enough votes to stop the bill from passing.

Supporters of the legislation, House Bill 74, said it’s needed to resolve a conflict in Wyoming law, which defines marriage as a contract “between a male and a female person” but also recognizes any valid marriage performed outside the state.

  13. i grew up in wyoming… and it was absolute hell! i really feel that what happened to mathew sheppard is a prime example of how the state feels about us. once the national news left the state went right back to thinking it should be ok to kill queers for fun. in fact some kid from the town where i went to high school even felt like that was uncontroviersial enough to allow a reporter doing a look back piece on mathew sheppard to quote him.

and of course the report was in this town following a lead on a gay student at that high school who had contacted local law enforcement because the harassment was violent and consistent.

i feel sorry for the lgbt people who are still stuck in that state. i’ve never hated anything as much as i hate wyoming. i really do have rant about how horrible it is every time it’s brought up. i’m still haunted by the belief that i should have killed myself when i was a little kid. wyoming was such a horrible place to grow up. now that i’ve “survived” it i’m left with a gaping hole in my life where my childhood should be. for me life didn’t start till i was far away from wyoming.

also wyoming’s slogan of being the equality state is such a farse! they only gave women the right to vote so they’d have the population count to qualify as a state/territory.
