A new poll says more than half of U.S. voters would support an openly gay president, or an openly gay person in a top government position.
The 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair survey found more Americans accepting of gays and lesbians in powerful and high-profile positions in sports and government than were opposed.
Fifty percent of respondents said they would accept a gay president and 44 percent said they would not. Another 55 percent said they would be comfortable with a gay Supreme Court justice and 56 percent would accept a gay secretary of state.
The world of sports does even better — 60 percent responded they would accept a gay quarterback playing in the Super Bowl. And for pageant followers, more than 50 percent responded a gay Miss America would be OK too.
