Police are investigating the murder of Anthony J. Perkins, a 29-year-old gay man who was found shot to death inside his car early Sunday morning in the District of Columbia.

Reports DC Agenda:

A police statement says the car had steam billowing from its engine when officers responded to reports of the sound of gunfire.

“D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department personnel responded to the scene, but could find no life signs,” the statement says.

Lt. Paul Wingate of the police homicide squad told DC Agenda that a member of Perkins’ family informed homicide investigators that Perkins was gay.

“We have no idea what the motive is,” Wingate said. However, he said investigators have no evidence so far to indicate the murder was a hate crime.

Wingate declined to say how many times Perkins was shot or whether he was shot by someone sitting beside him inside the car or whether the shots came from outside the vehicle.

“He was an intended target,” Wingate said. “It was not a random shooting.”
